Two Nights in Vermont --------------------- First: A windy, starless night - Winter in July We cast no shadow, only light Toward unforgiving sky A midnight meeting, quickly planned While others talked and talked, A brief kiss, then, hand-in-hand, Deserted roads we walked The first kiss in itself a first A gift of circumstance In a haunted place for those who're cursed, Not two from other lands That kiss touched off many more Behind cemetery gates No living souls `round to deplore The entwining of our fates As if the hidden stars aligned A shelter crossed our way: A covered bridge, a quiet blind Lined with bales of hay For hours, waiting for the rain We lay, and talked, and kissed Relentless wind across the plain But not a drop of mist And hours later, warm inside, We walked each other back The ghosts of Vermont each replied Approval from the black -- Then: The second night, a second Whispered invitation, A meeting, at which darkness beckoned (Our own) illumination Finally free to feel our feelings (Which) All day'd lay unavowed <--awk (We) Held each other b'low the ceiling Of stars, without a cloud (The) Familiar stroll down roads unpaved Let us slow our pace (For) The entire night for us was saved (or, if you want to zorch the previous, kinda-shitty verse, "The star-filled night for us was saved") With no desire to race The wind whipped forest trees around (But) unlike the night before The gale gave warm, inviting sound Adding to the lore We savoured every step and word We shared, `til we were drawn, Again, to where ghosts overheard Us, this time on the lawn Behind a tree in a back corner We made love as if vexed Thankful that no midnight mourner Came to pay respect ^^^ Is this verse really necessary? I stared up at her long, red hair Framed just by stellar sky. I reached to kiss her body bare, A gasp was her reply! She watched my face lit by the moon, then Smiled toward the night While all the ghosts there watched our union Applauding with starlight We didn't rise `til hours later After cuddling on graves thatched. One can't devise two nights much greater, Nor two souls better matched. Inspiration comes in any pill But I tell this honest story Of a two-night romance on a lonely hill And of a newfound, Vermont glory -- Fortunes ebb and flow like tides But no tide comes (in) this far Just once, fortunes fin'ly collided And yet we shine like stars Discards...
